Android 12L (Snow Cone)
Review of the mobile operating system Android 12L.
Codename: Snow Cone.
API level/NDK release: 32.
Android 12L is a bug fix for larger screens.
The “L” in the name stands for Large. Google released this version specifically for tablets, foldable smartphones (like the Galaxy Fold), and ChromeOS devices.
Here are the main differences from the regular Android 12:
1. Taskbar – the main change
In Android 12 (SDK 31) on tablets, the interface was just a “stretched” version of the phone.
In Android 12L (SDK 32), a taskbar appeared at the bottom of the screen, very similar to that in Windows or macOS.
- Why: You can instantly switch between applications or drag and drop an icon from the panel to the screen to open two applications side by side.
2. Two-column interface
Regular Android 12 shows everything in a single list. On a large screen, this looks silly: a lot of empty space on the sides.
Android 12L can split the screen into two parts:
- Notification shade: On the left – the notifications themselves, on the right – quick settings buttons (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth).
- Settings: On the left – a list of sections, on the right – details of the selected section.
3. Improved multitasking (Split Screen)
In SDK 32, Google simplified the launch of two applications simultaneously. Now the system itself highlights exactly how the applications will be divided when dragging, and makes the rounded corners of the windows more neat.
4. Compatibility mode (Letterboxing)
Many old applications look terrible on tablets (stretched or cropped).
In 12L (SDK 32), the developers have improved the mechanism that shows such applications in the center of the screen in a “phone” format, adding a beautiful blurred background around the edges, instead of black bars. The application no longer “breaks” when the screen is rotated.
And what if I have a regular smartphone?
If you have a regular phone (Pixel, Samsung S-series, Xiaomi), then you will hardly notice the difference when switching from SDK 31 to SDK 32.
- For phones, Android 12L is just a set of bug fixes, small battery optimizations, and minor animation improvements.
- All the “beauties” (Taskbar, two columns) on the small screen of the phone are simply disabled.
Developer’s Summary
- SDK 31 (Android 12): Global design update (Material You), new permissions for Bluetooth and geolocation.
- SDK 32 (Android 12L): This is a minor update. The main change is new APIs for working with multi-windowing and determining that the application is running on a foldable screen.
Conclusion: Android 12L is Google’s attempt to make Android tablets no longer just “big phones” and look more like working computers.
