What is SmartTube?
SmartTube is a video player for Android TV that streams content from the platform with no ads and skips sponsor segments automatically. You sign in, browse as usual, and SponsorBlock cuts out the sponsor reads before you sit through them.
The interface is built for television navigation, landscape only. A search bar sits at the top, recommended videos fill the grid below, and filters let you sort by upload date, length, or content type. When you open a video, the player supports 8K resolution, 60 FPS, HDR, and live chat if the stream has one. Playback speed adjusts in small increments, and you can force a specific refresh rate or expand the buffer to cut down on loading pauses. Subtitles toggle on or off, and stats overlay shows you whether the stream is holding its bitrate. You can blank the screen to prevent OLED burn-in while audio keeps running.
What stands out:
- SponsorBlock runs in the background and skips sponsored segments the moment they start, no manual intervention
- Background playback lets you listen to a video while another app sits in the foreground on your TV
- Every resolution up to 8K is selectable, along with 60 FPS and HDR when the source supports them
- Chromecast works once you manually link your phone or tablet to the TV through the app’s pairing screen
- Buffer size and refresh rate are both adjustable, so you can tune loading behavior or match your display’s native rate
Playback and display controls
Resolution caps at what your hardware can decode, so an 8K option appears only if your device handles it. Frame rate locks to 60 FPS when available, and HDR kicks in automatically on compatible panels. The buffer setting trades memory for smoother streams: a larger buffer reduces stuttering on slower connections but delays seeking. Refresh rate forcing overrides the system default, useful when your TV switches modes mid-stream. Stats show dropped frames, current bitrate, and codec in use, all updated in real time.
